Interesting things to know:

India's population growth is eclipsing the rest of the world on nearly every level. For instance, in India today there are 62 million boys below the age of five, which is more than the total population of France.  (source: The David and Lucile Packard Foundation)

You can help the mothers of these boys and other women
and children of India become self-sufficient and get an education by visiting Kolam.info to find out more and make a contribution.  Tell them Planet Charity referred you.  Aloha.

REFUGEES

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. (UNHCR.org) Today the UNHCR assists over 20 million persons worldwide.  (source: www.unhcr.org)

Here are some facts provided by the UNHCR about refugees, internally displaced people, asylum-seekers and stateless people around the world in 2006:

9.9 million (not including 4.3 million Palestinian refugees cared for by another U.N. agency, UNRWA). This was a 14 percent rise on 2005, due mainly to 1.2 million Iraqi refugees and a revised estimate of the refugee population in the United States. The Iraqi refugee total has since risen to 2.2 million.

70,000 displaced persons apply to immigrate to the U.S. each year.  Of those 70,000, approximately 50,000 are accepted.
